Unicode gives each character a stable digital address, so accented letters, Arabic script, mathematical symbols and emoji can move through the same software without breaking.

Before common character standards, the same byte could become one letter on one machine and nonsense on another. Unicode gave characters stable identities across platforms. It did not make languages interchangeable; it made room for difference inside the same digital world, across alphabets, scripts, symbols and emoji.

In 1980, IBM's first gigabyte-class hard drive was roughly refrigerator-sized, weighed about 250 kilograms and sold for around $40,000.

Today, a fingernail-sized memory card can hold hundreds of times as much. In four decades, storage moved from hardware delivered by forklift to something small enough to disappear in a drawer. The revolution was not one dramatic leap; it was thousands of refinements compounding until the old machine looked prehistoric.

Some Roman concrete has stood in seawater for 2,000 years while modern concrete crumbles in decades; recent research suggests it can even heal its own cracks.

Roman builders mixed lime so that tiny reactive fragments remained inside the concrete. When water later entered a crack, those fragments could dissolve and form minerals that sealed the gap. Two thousand years later, engineers are still studying a material that makes progress look less like replacement and more like remembering.

When it was unveiled in 1886, the Statue of Liberty was the warm brown of new copper; the famous green is a patina that slowly formed as the metal reacted with the air over about thirty years.

Its copper skin is only about two millimetres thick — roughly two coins — yet the thin green crust that grew over it actually protects the metal beneath from further corrosion. When a plan was floated to repaint it during a 1980s restoration, the public objected: the colour we now think of as the statue is really the mark of time working on it.

Fine white porcelain was made in China for around a thousand years before anyone in Europe could reproduce it — which is why fine tableware is still simply called 'china'.

The secret was a particular white clay, kaolin, fired at very high temperatures, and it was guarded so well that European makers spent generations and fortunes failing to copy it, finally cracking the recipe around 1708. A material can carry a whole trade empire inside it: pots so prized that nations chased their formula like a state secret.

The oldest surviving photograph, made by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce around 1826, needed an exposure of several hours — long enough that the sun moved across the sky and lit the courtyard's buildings from more than one side.

The blurry rooftop view, captured on a polished pewter plate coated with light-sensitive bitumen, is faint and strange, but it is the first time a real scene fixed itself onto a surface without a human hand drawing it. Every photograph since — every selfie, every satellite image — descends from that patient, hours-long stare out of a French window.

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory released its first images in June 2025 — capturing roughly 10 million galaxies and spotting more than 2,000 previously unknown asteroids in about ten hours of looking.

Perched on Cerro Pachón in Chile with an 8.4-metre mirror and the largest digital camera ever built, Rubin is designed to photograph the entire southern sky every few nights for ten years. That time-lapse of the universe — the Legacy Survey of Space and Time — should catalogue billions of galaxies and reveal anything that moves or flickers.

In 2025 scientists used artificial intelligence to design the genomes of working viruses that attack bacteria — the first time AI had written a complete viral genome that then functioned in the lab.

The targets were bacteriophages — harmless-to-humans viruses that infect bacteria. An AI model trained on natural genomes proposed new ones; in the lab, 16 of these designs assembled into phages that could kill their bacterial hosts. It is an early, carefully bounded step towards designing biology, and it arrives with real questions about how such power should be governed.

The US Army ran a secret unit of artists, designers and sound engineers who fought the Second World War with inflatable tanks, recorded troop noise and fake radio traffic. They staged more than twenty deceptions and are thought to have saved thousands of lives.

Roughly 1,100 men, many recruited from art schools and advertising, could impersonate a division of 30,000. They inflated rubber tanks and lorries, played recordings of armoured columns through enormous speakers audible for miles, and sent radio chatter to be intercepted. Fashion designer Bill Blass and painter Ellsworth Kelly served among them. The work stayed classified for decades; the unit finally received the Congressional Gold Medal in 2024, by which time only a handful of its members were alive to accept it.

In 1983 an Air Canada jet ran out of fuel at 12,500 metres because someone had calculated the load in pounds instead of kilograms. The pilots glided it down and landed on a disused runway that had become a racetrack.

Canada had recently gone metric, and the fuelling sum was done with the old conversion factor, leaving the aircraft with about half the fuel it needed. Both engines stopped mid-flight. Captain Bob Pearson happened to be an experienced glider pilot; first officer Maurice Quintal remembered a former airbase at Gimli, Manitoba. It was now a drag-racing strip, with a race meeting under way. They landed the airliner on it, nose gear collapsed, and stopped short of the crowd. Nobody was seriously hurt.

After a walk in the Alps in 1941, George de Mestral grew curious about the burrs stuck to his dog. Under a microscope he found tiny hooks catching in loops of fur — and spent the next decade turning that into Velcro.

Most people pull the burrs off and think no more about it. De Mestral, a Swiss engineer, looked closer and saw a fastening system nature had already solved. It took years to work out how to mass-produce hooks and loops in nylon; textile manufacturers thought the idea absurd. He named it from velours and crochet — velvet and hook. It is one of the founding examples of biomimicry, the practice of copying nature's engineering, and it went to the Moon on Apollo spacesuits.

In 1913 a Sheffield metallurgist was trying to make gun barrels last longer. His experiment failed and the samples went on the scrap pile — where he noticed weeks later that one of them had not rusted.

Harry Brearley left school at twelve and taught himself chemistry in the evenings. Adding chromium to steel had not solved the erosion problem he was hired to fix, so the offcuts were discarded. Passing the heap later, he saw one sample still bright while the rest had gone brown — chromium forms an invisible oxide film that seals the surface. He saw at once that it belonged in cutlery rather than artillery. Sheffield called it 'rustless steel' at first, and the world eventually settled on stainless.

In 1905 Frank Epperson left a cup of fruit soda on his porch overnight with the stirring stick still in it. San Francisco froze, and he came out to find the first ice lolly. He patented it eighteen years later.

He was eleven. He showed it to friends, kept making them, and only in 1924 filed a patent for 'frozen confection on a handle', originally selling them as Epsicles. His children reportedly preferred 'Pop's 'sicles' — hence popsicle. The company was sold during the Great Depression and became a global business. It is the tidiest example of the general rule that many inventions are simply an accident somebody bothered to notice twice.

In 1903 a French chemist knocked a glass flask off a shelf. It cracked but held its shape — a film of dried plastic inside had kept the pieces together. Car windscreens have worked that way ever since.

The flask had held cellulose nitrate, which had evaporated and left a clear lining. Bénédictus thought little of it until he read newspaper accounts of drivers badly cut by flying windscreen glass in the new motor cars. He went back to the flask, patented laminated glass, and the motor industry — initially reluctant about the cost — adopted it once the accident figures became impossible to ignore. The same sandwich of glass and plastic is in the windscreen of every car on the road today.

In 1938 Douglas Corrigan was refused permission to fly the Atlantic. He took off from New York saying he was going to California, and landed 28 hours later in Dublin, claiming he had misread his compass. Nobody believed him, and nobody minded.

Corrigan had helped build Lindbergh's Spirit of St Louis and had been applying for years to make his own crossing; his patched-up aircraft was repeatedly judged unfit. So he filed for a transcontinental flight, pointed the nose east into the cloud, and turned up in Ireland. Officials suspended his licence for precisely the length of his voyage home. America adored him — he got a ticker-tape parade bigger than Lindbergh's — and he maintained the compass story, straight-faced, for the rest of his life.
