There are more trees on Earth than there are stars in the Milky Way.

A landmark 2015 study combining hundreds of thousands of ground surveys with satellite data put Earth's tree count at about 3 trillion. Our galaxy holds an estimated 100 to 400 billion stars — so trees outnumber them several times over. The same study carried a sting: humans have roughly halved the world's trees since farming began.

The horseshoe crab has blue blood so sensitive to contamination that it is used to keep vaccines safe.

Horseshoe crab blood is blue because it carries oxygen with copper rather than iron. It also contains cells that clot instantly around bacterial toxins — so reliably that, since the 1970s, an extract called LAL has been the standard test ensuring vaccines, IV drugs and implants are free of contamination. Nearly every injectable medicine has, in effect, been checked by a creature older than the dinosaurs.

Marie Curie's notebooks are still so radioactive that they are kept in lead-lined boxes.

Curie handled radium with bare hands and carried glowing test tubes in her pockets, unaware of the danger. More than a century on, her laboratory notebooks — held at the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris — remain contaminated with radium-226, whose half-life is 1,600 years. They are stored in lead-lined boxes, and researchers must sign a waiver and wear protection to view them. They will stay hazardous for another 1,500 years.

Gallium is a metal that melts in your hand — its melting point sits just below body temperature.

Solid at room temperature, gallium turns to liquid at about 30°C (86°F), so a small piece held in a warm palm slowly puddles into a silvery pool. It is harmless to touch, which makes it a favourite for science demonstrations — a spoon cast from gallium will 'disappear' when used to stir a hot drink. It's a vivid reminder of how arbitrary the line between solid and liquid can be.

The largest desert on Earth is Antarctica.

A desert is defined by how little precipitation it receives, not by heat or sand. By that measure Antarctica — about 14 million square kilometres (5.4 million sq mi) where almost no rain or snow falls in the dry interior — is the biggest desert on the planet, larger than the Sahara. Parts of its 'Dry Valleys' may not have seen rainfall in millions of years.

In Utah, a forest of about 47,000 aspen trunks is actually a single organism sharing one root system.

Named Pando ('I spread' in Latin), this grove of quaking aspens looks like thousands of separate trees, but every trunk is a genetically identical clone growing from one vast underground root network. Weighing an estimated 6,000 tonnes (6,600 short tons), it is among the heaviest known living things — and possibly one of the oldest, with estimates running to thousands of years. It is, in a real sense, a single life pretending to be a forest.

The point on Earth's surface closest to outer space is not Everest, but Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador.

Everest is the highest above sea level, but Earth is not a perfect sphere — it bulges at the equator. Chimborazo sits almost on that bulge, one degree south of the equator, so although its summit is over 2,500 metres (8,200 feet) lower than Everest's by sea level, it stands about 2 kilometres (1.2 miles) farther from the planet's centre. Measured from the middle of the Earth, its peak is the closest solid ground to space.

The Sahara was green grassland dotted with lakes as recently as 6,000 years ago.

For thousands of years during the 'African Humid Period', a wobble in Earth's orbit shifted the monsoon north and turned today's largest hot desert into savanna. Rock art there shows people herding cattle, and swimming, beside lakes and rivers now buried under sand. The greening ended only a few thousand years ago as the climate slowly dried — a reminder that even deserts are chapters, not permanent states.

Wombats are the only known animals that produce cube-shaped droppings.

These burrowing Australian marsupials leave behind little cubes — up to a hundred a night — and scientists spent years puzzling over how. A 2019 study found the answer in the wombat's long intestine, whose walls stretch unevenly, moulding soft waste into flat-sided blocks before it dries. The likely purpose is practical: cubes don't roll away, so a wombat can stack them to mark its territory.

Flamingos are not born pink — they turn pink from what they eat.

Flamingo chicks hatch grey. Their famous colour comes from pigments called carotenoids in the algae and small shellfish they filter from the water — the same family of compounds that makes carrots orange. A flamingo's diet quite literally shows on its feathers, and a captive bird fed the wrong food will slowly fade to white. You are, in the plainest sense, coloured by what you consume.

Sea otters hold hands while they sleep so they don't drift apart.

Resting at the surface, sea otters link paws — sometimes in groups of dozens called 'rafts' — so the current doesn't carry them off from one another in the night. Pups are often tethered this way to their mothers. They will also wrap themselves in kelp for the same reason, anchoring against the sea. It is one of nature's plainest images of holding on to keep from being lost.

Carrots were purple and yellow long before the familiar orange ones existed.

The earliest cultivated carrots, grown in and around Persia over a thousand years ago, were purple and yellow. The orange carrot we treat as default appeared much later, bred up in the Netherlands around the 16th–17th centuries, and only then spread across the world. The 'normal' colour of a vegetable turns out to be a fairly recent human choice, not a fact of nature.

Some turtles can breathe through their rear ends.

Certain freshwater turtles have a chamber near the tail, the cloaca, lined with blood-rich tissue that can pull oxygen straight from the water. This 'cloacal respiration' lets a few species stay submerged for months through winter without ever surfacing for air. It is one of evolution's stranger solutions — a way to keep breathing without breathing at all.

There are more possible games of chess than there are atoms in the observable universe.

The number of distinct chess games is estimated at around 10 to the power of 120 — the 'Shannon number' — while the observable universe holds an estimated 10 to the power of 80 atoms. That means the possibilities hidden inside a single wooden board vastly exceed the entire physical universe. A game with 32 pieces and 64 squares contains more branching futures than reality has building blocks.
