Bananas are slightly radioactive, because they are rich in naturally radioactive potassium.

Why it matters

The idea in context

Potassium-40 is a natural, faintly radioactive isotope found in all of us and in potassium-rich foods. The dose from a banana is tiny and harmless — scientists half-jokingly measure minor radiation in 'banana equivalents'.
