In experiments, bees can learn to recognise individual human faces by treating them as patterns of features.
Animal cognition
Why it matters
The idea in context
Bees do not understand faces as humans do, but studies show they can be trained to distinguish face-like patterns and remember them. That is impressive for a small brain built for a very different life. This matters because intelligence comes in many compact forms. The lesson: never judge cognition only by size.
