Iceland is one of the only inhabited places on Earth with virtually no mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes live on nearly every landmass, including the Arctic — yet Iceland has essentially none. The leading explanation is its unstable climate: Iceland's ponds freeze and thaw unpredictably, and mosquito larvae can't reliably complete their life cycle across those sudden swings. Neighbouring, colder places have them; Iceland's peculiar rhythm of freezes is what keeps them out. Sometimes it's timing, not harshness, that decides who survives.

A hummingbird can fly backwards, and its heart can beat over 1,000 times a minute.

Hummingbirds are the only birds that can truly hover and fly backwards, their wings tracing a figure-eight up to 80 times a second. Powering that costs an astonishing amount of energy: their hearts can race past 1,000 beats a minute, and to survive the night they drop into a deep, cold torpor that slows the body almost to a stop. They live their whole lives at the very edge of what a body can sustain.

The first passengers of a hot-air balloon were a sheep, a duck and a rooster.

In September 1783, before risking a human, the Montgolfier brothers sent up a balloon over Versailles carrying three animals as a test — watched by King Louis XVI and a vast crowd. The eight-minute flight was meant to check whether the air high above was safe to breathe. All three landed unharmed, and two months later humans made the first crewed ascent. Progress, as often, sent the animals first.

Peatlands cover little land but store enormous carbon.

Peat forms when waterlogged plants decay very slowly. Although peatlands occupy a small share of land, they store a huge amount of soil carbon. When drained or burned, that ancient carbon returns to the air, which is why wet peat can be as climate-critical as forest.

A 13th-century prayer book hid lost Archimedes texts beneath its prayers.

The book was made by scraping and reusing older parchment, including a 10th-century copy of Archimedes. Danish scholar Johan Ludvig Heiberg recognized the hidden text in Constantinople in 1906; after a 1998 auction, imaging work at the Walters helped reveal more. Lost knowledge sometimes survives as a ghost under another book.
