When Nicaragua opened its first schools for deaf children in the 1980s, the pupils had no shared language. Within a few years they had spontaneously created one — with grammar the adults had never taught them.

The children arrived using improvised home signs, unintelligible to one another. Thrown together, they built a shared pidgin — and then the younger intake did something remarkable: they regularised it, adding consistent grammatical structure their older schoolmates had not used. Each new cohort of young children made it more systematic. Linguists including Judy Shepard-Kegl and Ann Senghas documented it as it happened, making it the only time a human language has been observed being born. It suggests grammar is something children impose, not merely absorb.

Forgetting why you came into a room is not age or distraction. Passing through a doorway signals to the brain that one episode has ended, and it quietly files away what you were holding.

Experiments by Gabriel Radvansky and colleagues had people carry objects between rooms, and again across the same distance within one room. Recall dropped only when a doorway was crossed — including in virtual environments, and even when participants walked back to where they started. Memory appears to be organised in event chunks, and a boundary such as a door tells the mind the previous chunk is complete. Later work suggests the effect is smaller in very familiar rooms, but the mechanism holds: your memory is keeping the current scene, not a continuous tape.

Reviewing something four times in one evening is far weaker than reviewing it four times across a month. The forgetting between sessions is not wasted — the effort of retrieval is what builds the memory.

Hermann Ebbinghaus identified it on himself in the 1880s, and it has since become one of the most reliably replicated findings in psychology. Cramming produces a feeling of fluency that predicts exam performance badly; spaced practice feels harder and works better, because each retrieval after partial forgetting strengthens the trace. The practical version is simple — review something a day later, then a few days later, then a fortnight later. Flow — losing track of hours in a task — is not luck. It arrives reliably when the challenge sits just above your current skill, the goal is clear, and feedback is immediate. Miss those and it does not come.

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi interviewed climbers, surgeons, composers and chess players and found them describing the same state in almost identical words: absorbed, effortless, unselfconscious, unaware of time. His key finding was the balance point. Too easy and attention wanders into boredom; too hard and it collapses into anxiety. The narrow band between them is where flow lives, which is why it moves as you improve — what absorbed you last year will bore you next year unless the difficulty rises with you.

Patients told outright that they were being given inert pills — no deception at all — still improved in trials for chronic back pain and irritable bowel syndrome. The effect survived knowing.

Ted Kaptchuk's group at Harvard ran the first trials, handing patients bottles labelled 'placebo pills' and explaining plainly that they contained no active drug. Symptoms still eased, more than in patients given nothing. The likeliest explanations involve expectation, the ritual of treatment and the attention of a clinician, all of which have measurable effects on symptom perception. Focused work drains a specific mental resource, and city streets keep draining it because they demand constant filtering. Natural settings hold attention gently instead, letting the depleted system recover.

Rachel and Stephen Kaplan proposed the distinction: directed attention, which we spend on concentration and must be replenished, and 'soft fascination' — moving leaves, water, clouds — which occupies the mind without effort. Studies since have found improvements in working memory and error rates after walks in parks compared with walks in traffic, with the same distance and exertion. The practical read is modest but consistent: when your concentration is gone, more effort works badly, and twenty unhurried minutes among trees works better.

Doing someone a kindness makes you warmer towards them, not just the other way round. Benjamin Franklin used it deliberately on a political rival — he asked to borrow a rare book, and made a lifelong friend.

Franklin described the tactic in his autobiography, noting the old maxim that someone who has already done you one kindness will be readier to do you another. The usual explanation is cognitive dissonance: having helped a person you disliked, the easiest way to make sense of your own behaviour is to decide you must quite like them. Laboratory studies in the 1960s found the pattern held. The practical lesson is counterintuitive but useful — a small, specific request can build a relationship faster than an offer of help.

Shinrin-yoku — forest bathing — is not a hike. It is unhurried time among trees with the phone away, and Japan has treated it as preventive medicine since the 1980s.

The term was coined by Japan's forestry ministry in 1982, and the country now designates dozens of official forest-therapy sites. Studies have reported lower blood pressure, reduced cortisol and improved mood after sessions, though many are small and comparing forest with city confounds air quality, noise and traffic. What is not in doubt is the direction. Several countries now run nature-prescription schemes, and the mechanism may simply be a combination of quiet, clean air, gentle movement and undemanding attention.

John Kennedy Toole could not get his comic novel published and took his own life at thirty-one. His mother spent the next eleven years pressing the manuscript on anyone who would take it. It won the Pulitzer Prize.

Thelma Toole was repeatedly turned away before she cornered the novelist Walker Percy, then teaching in New Orleans, and effectively refused to leave until he read it. Percy began expecting to find a reason to stop and instead could not put it down. It was published in 1980, twelve years after his death, and won the Pulitzer for Fiction in 1981. Motivation is usually treated as the thing that comes first. In practice it more often follows the action: doing a small piece of the thing tends to produce the willingness to do the rest.

This is the core of behavioural activation, a treatment for low mood with a strong evidence base — in some trials performing comparably to more complex therapies. The reasoning is that low mood shrinks activity, and shrinking activity lowers mood further, so the loop is broken from the behaviour side rather than the feeling side. The steps are deliberately unambitious: put the shoes on, open the document, walk to the end of the road. Feeling follows more reliably than it leads. If low mood is persistent, this is worth raising with a doctor rather than handling alone.

Because much of what makes a day good passes unregistered, the gain comes from noticing rather than from adding anything. Studies find the effect stronger for small, frequent things than for large rare ones, which is convenient, since ordinary days are mostly made of small things.

Toki Pona is often described as minimalist, but the better word is deliberate. Instead of adding a separate word for every shade of meaning, it asks the speaker to build from a small set of roots. Friend becomes good person. Tool becomes a useful thing. The exercise is not only linguistic; it is mental tidying. You find out which parts of a thought are load-bearing and which are decoration.

Munch called it a scream in nature, not merely a person screaming. That distinction matters. The figure is less a portrait than a receiver, a body tuned to a world that has become too loud.
