Self-criticism is widely assumed to drive standards. The research points the other way: people who treat their own failures with the tolerance they would offer a friend are more likely to try again, not less.

Why it matters

The idea in context

Kristin Neff's work separates self-compassion from self-esteem: not judging yourself favourably, but responding to your own difficulty without contempt. Studies associate it with lower anxiety and depression, and — the counterintuitive part — with greater personal accountability and more willingness to make a second attempt after failing. The proposed mechanism is that harsh self-criticism makes failure so unpleasant that avoiding the task becomes the safer option. Warmth keeps the door open.

Kristin Neff'in çalışması öz-şefkati özsaygıdan ayırır: Kendinizi olumlu yargılamak değil, kendi zorluğunuza küçümsemeden karşılık vermek.
