The 2,000-year-old Antikythera mechanism could predict astronomical positions — an analogue 'computer'.

Recovered in 1901 from a Roman-era shipwreck off the Greek island of Antikythera, this bronze device from around 100 BC used dozens of precise gears to predict eclipses, planetary positions and even the timing of the Olympic Games. Often called the first known analogue computer, nothing of comparable complexity appears again for over a thousand years.

Wikipedia went live in 2001 and grew into one of the world’s most visited reference sites through volunteer editing.

Its strength and weakness come from the same idea: many people can add, correct and debate knowledge in public. That has made it fast, broad and imperfect, with quality depending on sources and community review. This matters globally because access to reference knowledge changed dramatically. The lesson: openness needs maintenance, not blind trust.

The Analytical Engine weaves algebraic patterns, just as the loom weaves flowers and leaves.

Authentic and precisely datable: from Note A of Ada Lovelace's annotations (1843) to her translation of a paper on Babbage's Analytical Engine — “we may say most aptly that the Analytical Engine weaves algebraical patterns just as the Jacquard-loom weaves flowers and leaves.” In that image she saw past arithmetic to general computation, a century before electronic computers existed.

A computer would deserve to be called intelligent if it could deceive a human into believing it was human.

A paraphrase of the idea in Alan Turing's landmark paper “Computing Machinery and Intelligence” (Mind, 1950), which proposed the imitation game — now called the Turing test: replace the fog of “can machines think?” with a measurable question, can one converse indistinguishably from a human? Turing predicted machines would pass by 2000. He was early — but not wrong.
