Working in Baghdad's House of Wisdom in the 9th century, al-Khwarizmi helped found algebra: 'algebra' comes from the title of his book 'al-jabr', and 'algorithm' from the Latin form of his own name. Every time a computer follows a step-by-step procedure, the word quietly carries the name of a medieval mathematician.
