Marcus Aurelius, emperor of Rome, kept a private notebook of reminders to himself that we now call the Meditations. Written on campaign and never meant for publication, its recurring theme is that contentment is not supplied by circumstances but assembled by the mind — very little is needed once you govern how you think.
