The idea in context
Calvero's line in Limelight (1952), Chaplin's elegy for the music-hall world of his youth. The aging clown cannot control how his story ends — fading fame, a failing heart — so he hands the pen to time itself. The comfort has an edge of resignation: the ending will be right, but it will not be ours to write.
