A spoonful of sugar feels ordinary, but for centuries it was a luxury crop grown through coerced labour and shipped through global trade networks. It tied kitchens to plantations, ports, banks and empires from the Caribbean to Europe and beyond. The lesson is uncomfortable: everyday appetites can hide whole systems of power.

Germ theory changed medicine by showing that specific invisible organisms can cause disease, making hygiene, sterilisation and vaccination part of modern care.

Before germ theory, disease was often blamed on bad air, imbalance or vague corruption. Showing that microbes could transmit illness gave doctors and public-health workers something concrete to interrupt: dirty instruments, contaminated water, infected wounds and unsafe contact. Its relevance is global because every clinic, kitchen and clean-water system still depends on that insight.

The AGC had about 4 KB of RAM, 72 KB of fixed 'rope core' memory, and ran at roughly 1 MHz — less computing power than a musical greeting card. Yet in 1969 it steered Apollo 11 across 380,000 km, ran the landing radar, and even recovered gracefully from overload alarms minutes before touchdown. The story is not about weak hardware; it is about what disciplined engineering, compact code and ruthless prioritising can do under impossible constraints.
