On a voyage from India to England, Chandrasekhar followed the mathematics of dying stars into uncomfortable territory. If a white dwarf became too massive, electron pressure would not be enough to resist collapse. The idea was resisted by eminent astronomers, but the limit endured and opened paths toward supernovae, neutron stars and black holes.
