Authentic Camus: from his lyrical essay “Return to Tipasa” (1952), collected in Summer (1954). Revisiting the sunlit Algerian ruins of his youth in a bleak postwar season, he wrote the full passage: “In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.” It is not optimism but discovery — a warmth the cold could not requisition.
