Almost certainly not Hemingway: quote researchers trace the “open a vein” family of sayings to the sportswriting world — Red Smith was quoted in 1949 as saying “You simply sit down at the typewriter, open your veins, and bleed.” Hemingway's name got attached later, because the sentiment matches his legend of costly, honest prose. The truth in it stands: writing that costs nothing usually reads that way.
