Verified Mandela: he said it on 16 July 2003 at the Johannesburg launch of the Mindset Network, an education initiative; the Nelson Mandela Foundation archives the speech. It was not rhetoric to him — Mandela earned a law degree through correspondence courses and turned Robben Island's prison into what inmates called “the university”, where prisoners taught each other through decades of confinement.
