Vantablack is not a paint but a surface of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes that trap almost all incoming light — it absorbs about 99.96% of it. Coat a crumpled 3D shape in it and the eye can no longer read its contours; it reads as a flat black hole. Its restricted artistic use famously led to disputes over who is allowed to use it.
