Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque pioneered Cubism, showing objects from multiple viewpoints instead of one fixed angle.

Why it matters

The idea in context

Cubism challenged the old agreement that a picture should imitate one eye looking from one place. Faces, instruments and tables could be fractured and rebuilt, letting time, movement and thought enter the image. Modern art did not have to copy appearance; it could analyse reality and show the analysis.
