Morning light does more than brighten a room; it helps set the body's clock for alertness, hormones and sleep.

Why it matters

The idea in context

Special light-sensitive cells in the eye send timing information to the brain's master clock. That signal helps the body distinguish morning from night, which is why sleep is not only a bedtime issue. A clearer day often begins with a clearer first signal.
