Widely attached to Nietzsche, but not found in his works in this form. It seems to have grown out of Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning, which famously quotes Nietzsche's genuine line — “He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how” — and the two ideas fused in retelling. The compressed version keeps the hard core: suffering alone is not noble; shaping it into meaning is the work.
