From Monsieur Verdoux (1947). Verdoux — made redundant by a bank after thirty years, then made monstrous by his own answer to ruin — is diagnosing the world rather than advising anyone. Chaplin's satire cuts both ways: a society that rewards ruthlessness should not act surprised when individuals learn the lesson too well.
