Atoms are mostly empty space, but electromagnetic forces between particles make matter feel solid to your hand.

Why it matters

The idea in context

The nucleus is tiny compared with the atom around it, and electrons occupy regions far outside that centre. Yet when your hand meets a table, charged particles repel and resist overlap. Solidity is therefore not fullness; it is interaction. The everyday world is made from invisible forces holding boundaries in place.
