The idea in context
Genuine Nietzsche, and remarkably early: he wrote it at twenty in a letter to his sister Elisabeth (11 June 1865), explaining why he was abandoning theology — “if you wish to strive for peace of soul and happiness, then believe; if you wish to be a disciple of truth, then inquire.” The whole later philosophy is seeded here: comfort and truth ask different prices, and a serious mind must know which bill it is paying.
