The idea in context
The stunt worked because it attacked the exact room that had just priced the object. But the market absorbed the attack, certified it, named it and sold it again. That is the sharper joke. Destruction did not end the artwork; it became its provenance. Contemporary art often asks whether the frame is part of the work. Banksy made the frame bite back.
