Most people are slightly taller in the morning than at night, as the soft discs between the vertebrae decompress during sleep and compress again through the day.

Why it matters

The idea in context

Standing, sitting and moving slowly squeeze fluid from the gel-like spinal discs; a night lying down lets them draw it back and expand. Astronauts, freed from gravity for months, can gain several centimetres. Human height feels fixed, but even it has a daily tide.
