Code-switching is the movement between languages, dialects or registers as people read audience, place, safety and belonging.

Why it matters

The idea in context

A bilingual person may change language because of intimacy, authority, humour, caution or memory. The shift can happen between whole languages, dialects or tones of speech. It is not a failure to be consistent; often it is social intelligence at work, adjusting the sentence to the room it has entered.
