The standard shipping container turned cargo into a shared language between ships, trucks, trains and ports.

Why it matters

The idea in context

Before containerization, cargo was often loaded piece by piece: crates, sacks and barrels handled slowly by armies of workers. Standard boxes cut friction from the journey, lowering cost and reshaping ports, factories and supply chains. Much of modern life arrives inside an object designed to be almost invisible.
