Most of my life's terrible misfortunes never actually happened — I only feared they would.

Often attributed to Montaigne

Why it matters

The idea in context

Not found in Montaigne's Essays in this form, so the attribution is popular rather than proven — but it distils a genuine Montaigne theme. He wrote: “He who fears he shall suffer, already suffers what he fears.” Four centuries before cognitive therapy, Montaigne had the diagnosis: imagined misfortunes collect real payments.

Türkçe

Aynı kart, başka bir dilde.

Hayatımın korkunç talihsizliklerinin çoğu aslında hiç yaşanmadı; ben yalnızca yaşanacaklarından korktum.
Genellikle Montaigne'e atfedilir
