The idea in context

Widely attributed to Carl Jung, but never traced to his writings; it is best read as a modern summary of a Jungian theme. Jung's own claim was that we are not doomed to repeat what shaped us: what is made conscious can be chosen, and the self is a task as much as an inheritance.

This one is genuine: Jung wrote it in a letter to Fanny Bowditch dated 22 October 1916, published in C.G. Jung Letters, Volume 1. The contrast is the heart of his method: outward looking produces dreams — fantasy and projection; inward looking is the harder work of waking, meeting one's own motives and shadows without disguise.

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) is the United States' national public-health agency, founded in 1946 and based in Atlanta. Its physical-activity guidance stresses that movement pays off immediately, not just decades later: a single session of moderate activity can sharpen thinking, ease anxiety, lower blood pressure and improve that night's sleep. The agency recommends about 150 minutes of moderate activity a week — but notes that any amount counts.
