Flow is the state of being so absorbed in a task that self-consciousness drops and time seems to change shape.
Psychology
Why it matters
The idea in context
Flow tends to appear when a task is difficult enough to demand focus but not so difficult that it overwhelms. Musicians, athletes, cooks, programmers and craftspeople recognise the same narrowing of attention. The state is not passive happiness; it is attention finding a shape it can inhabit.
