The Cambridge coffee-pot camera solved a wonderfully small problem: no one wanted to walk to an empty pot. That local convenience foreshadowed a world of cameras checking doors, traffic, shops, pets and weather. Many technologies begin not as grand visions, but as cheap answers to a daily irritation.
