Why it matters

The idea in context

Founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar in 1919, the Bauhaus fused art, craft and industry around the idea that form should follow function. The Nazis forced it to close in 1933, scattering its teachers across the world — which is how its clean, functional style went on to shape modern furniture, typography and architecture everywhere.
