The idea in context
Van Gogh’s reputation was built after his death through the preservation, promotion and publication of his work, especially by his brother Theo and later Theo’s wife, Jo van Gogh-Bonger. The contrast between his hard life and later fame is part of his myth, but the art itself is why it lasted.
