The idea in context
The Mona Lisa has no clearly visible eyebrows or eyelashes — perhaps a fashion of the time, perhaps thinned by centuries of cleaning, or perhaps simply unfinished. A high-resolution scan in 2007 suggested Leonardo had once painted fine brows that have since faded almost entirely away.
