Anxious? Name 5 things you can see, 4 you can hear, 3 you can feel, 2 you can smell, 1 you can taste. It's called the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique.

Why it matters

The idea in context

Anxiety pulls the mind into the future — into what might go wrong. This exercise, widely used by therapists, does the opposite: by deliberately naming what your five senses register right now, you crowd out the spiralling thoughts and pin your attention to the present, where the feared thing is not actually happening. Going slowly, one sense at a time, is what makes it work.

Kaygılı mısın? Görebildiğin 5 şeyi, duyabildiğin 4 şeyi, hissedebildiğin 3 şeyi, koklayabildiğin 2 şeyi, tadabildiğin 1 şeyi say. Buna 5-4-3-2-1 topraklama tekniği denir.

Kaygı zihni geleceğe çeker — neyin ters gidebileceğine. Terapistlerin sıkça kullandığı bu egzersiz tam tersini yapar: Beş duyunun şu anda algıladığı şeyleri bilerek adlandırarak, dönüp duran düşüncelere yer bırakmaz ve dikkatini, korkulan şeyin aslında yaşanmadığı şimdiki ana sabitlersin. Yavaş yavaş, her seferinde tek bir duyuyla ilerlemek, tekniği işler kılan şeydir.
