Pain is produced by the nervous system, not simply recorded by the body like a camera filming damage.

Why it matters

The idea in context

Tissue damage can trigger pain, but pain also depends on threat, attention, memory, inflammation and context. That is why two injuries can feel different, and why fear can amplify pain. The point is not that pain is imaginary; it is real precisely because the nervous system creates it to protect you.
